Restoring Pinball Machines to Look and Play Like New Condition
Williams Indianna Jones @ Dr Dave Pinball Spa & Resort
Approximately 30 hours of restoration performed on this 1993 Williams Classic Indianna Jones widebody pinball machine. It spent a good amount of time here at the Dr Dave Pinball Day Spa and Resort getting all the gremlins out of this as there were a myriad of them to excercise out of this one.
Many parts replaced to get this game playing and looking like brand new again.
The process:
We took everything off the top side to deep clean the hard to reach areas of the playfield, and replace the burned out bulbs. Install warm LEDS for the general illumination circuit.
Rebuilt the flippers, the pop bumpers and the tilt table so all work strong and optimally. Went through the MPU and removed the troublesome batteries and upgraded it to NVRAM so no more leaky batteries to worry about. Replaced burned out connectors going to the driver board. The driver board had a host of issues plagueing it so we replaced that board and upgraded it's 5V reg to a much more stable version. We diagnosed the many optocoupler circuit boards in the game and wound up replacing the trough board sender and reciever opto boards as well as the 16 opto circuit board that sits beneath the playfield as well as the power board for the DMD display for optimal reliability. New clear silicone rubber all around. Color flipper silicone rubber and posts. New upgraded art plastic for over the center 3 drop targets. Replaced the worn out / broken drop targets as well as update the sticker on them with gold foil artwork type. Cleaned up the legs and install new leg levellers.

Thankyou Kyle! The previous video attempt was hampered by camera issues. :o
Dr. Dave it's beautiful
Thankyou Kyle. =) Just listed my Superduper restored and modded out Stern Spiderman. Check it out!
Is the music playing at like 3x speed? 😆
Nah. Thats just the mode hurry up music
Great game
This is 'Freedom' with extra drop targets on the right. Nice.

Very well played!
How bad was the playfield swap on this? Considering it on mine but can't decide.
Plan on spending HOURS cleaning out the excess clear inside each tang of the 11 Star rollovers for starters. Installing tnuts and anchor bolts for the pops (or do it the Williams way and skip the anchors and just use screws from the backside of the playfield to secure the pop bumper brackets.) And then a few days of rebuilding everything on the old playfield and then unstapling everything from the old and sliding it over to the new and screwing and stapling everything down once you make sure the rear side dimpling lines up with assemblies like the drop target banks as some times they don't line up right and will be prone to Bally bricking of the drop targets as the drop targets will sit too far back. You want the front of the drops to be right up flush with the playfield wood when they are in reset position to minimize bricking.
That game is playing great! Nice action from the pop bumpers and flippers. The owner should be pleased 👏
Thanks Dave! Yes just had the owner over to check it out and play it. He loved it!
Very nice machine! Very cool!
Awesome Dr. Dave
this was played in the early 80s as a little boy 😊
It's a great game to bring back all those childhood memories. =)
This was my favorite game at the Saints West bowling alley. I'd walk home from the night shift working at white castle in the winter and take a warm up break to play this for about an hour. One game I got the ball stuck perfectly balanced on that left upper shute bonus button and gently kept nuging it for 70000 bonuses just til it was about to go over a million at like 999940 score. Then tilted it and put my initials in as top score. Year 1985
Congratulations. Hope youn didn't carve your initials into the game like so many did back then as there is no way to put your initials into these Classic Ballys until the mid to late 80's. pre 1985, all these games had were numerical scoring.
My favorite pinball til Adams Family came out. Didn't clicking the flipper buttons change the green ABCD lights? I distinctly remember that?
Williams pinball came up with LANE CHANGE with 1980 Firepower. Bally didn't incorporate lane change until much later AFTER Eigth Ball Deluxe was made in 1981. EBD never had lane change as a feature. It would make the game too easy anyway.
That is one superb looking Centaur!!!
Thankyou! We pulled out all the stops on this one. =)
This is the best example of good basic pinball of the seventies. I have one too.
Universal Studios wants a pinball machine titled "Knight Rider" produced by Stern next year. The series starred David Hasselhoff.
Universal may want it but Stern most likely won't do it becuase the theme is even too cheesy for them. Although, it could be a winner in Germany.
I use to have a Buck Rogers in my collection many years ago. I thought it was a good solid player and fun to play. I let it go because I am an EM pinball machines collector and only so much space in the line up.
I totally get it Vic. =)
I wish Krynski would have made the 1 2 3 4 to where you had to make them in rotation, what would have made a more challenging and better game. The way the game is now, it's too easy to light the specials. Also, he should have made the specials only 1 allowed per game. It's too easy to keep hitting the specials and racking up 10 or more free games. I honestly don't know how this game ever made any money on location
It's a good game for it's time. That being said, I did tire of it after a while vs other EM titles. I also replaced the flipper buttons this era of game came with that would most times make blooody fingers from lifting your fingernail off from your fingeras the button would press too far into the cabinet. With a little reworking of the button area, you can fit a late 70's flipper button in there which makes these games much more enjoyable.
I restored a 4 Square from a pile of 100 dirty junk parts. Some misguided person thought he was going to restore it, so he dismantled the whole game and stripped the entire cabinet down to bare wood. Then he made an unfinished, amateur attempt at repainting the playfield, but I couldn't figure out why. When I sanded down, I couldn't find anything wrong with the original playfield. So I repainted the playfield with rattle cans as a fixup, not a museum restoration, what turned out okay and only an expert would know the difference. Then I got a new backglass, without that original blue shading on the girl's forehead, what looked weird to me. The game was chock full of electrical issues and took me 3 weeks to get it running again
Wow! That's dedication!
Beautiful!
Awesome job! I clearcoated the PF in my Grand Prix and it really sped up the game. Great work
Thankyou! =)
Beautiful work!
I’m disappointed that there isn’t a pinball machine emoji. 💔
Great work.
Looks awesome Dr. Dave
Nice job. Loved that show as a kid.
Great game, perfectly tuned up!
Thankyou Dave!
I loved that pinball (flipper as I am french) perfect balance of skills, features and luck . It went down hill from that time onwards. Thank you for these emotional ride back in time when I was high school student 😊
"quit talkin an start chalkin"
Amazing Dr. Dave
Thankyou Kyle! How's your game doing?
@ going great as always thanks Dr. Dave
Bell in lower cabinet sounds different. Williams got in trouble using Marilyn n had to change to Lola.
@@garrymiller8031 Williams used this bell a LOT during this timeframe. And yes, they had to change to Lola for copyright reasons.
Would you have lost a little if you shook the machine horizontally, in the first game, first round? It don't make us no, mate!! I love to rock pinball machines vertically to give jet bumpers some action, but in some instances I'd do what the real Hulk does: shake up machines and keep the ball alive, hoping "Tilt" won't appear.
Yes indeed! I was going easy on the old gal. ;)
@pinballdoctor Make it harder!! Love to see the word "TILT!!" happen! Me wanna see what it takes to lose a little bonus, so shake horizontally!!!!!
Atari games were rarely great but this one is actually pretty solid. Wouldn’t mind having this one.
Better than new 👌
You are a man of great taste Dave. =)
Noticed the meca godzilla ramp on your machine constantly moving back and forth right and left during game play? Did you change it to do that in settings? My machine does not work that way.
Some background: This machine was on an Island and the customer wanted it deep cleaned and flippers rebuilt and thoroughly checked out and refreshed as their family heavily played it with all the factory black rubber staining the entire playfield surface and ramps. The customer also wanted us to suggest and install any mod we could get our hands on in short notice. The customer never said anything about the spinner mech turning back and forth until we were in front of the game. We looked at the mech and could not see anything wrong with the switches or wiring to it so we left it as is FOR NOW with the intention of researching the movement of the mech with STERN tech staff and PINSIDE research. Nothing definitive on the fix for it thus far except for a board replacement for the mech or adjusting the motor speed / voltage in settings. Due to go out to the island again Spring of 2025 to address the erroneous spinner mech action with more data on the issue in hand (customer isn't really concerned about it as he has always played it this way since he bought it new.) Also going to take the opportunity to install ATOMIC GODZILLA Stumblor mod and maybe a few other goodies while there. PS: Nice Fade to Black cover
Geeteeoh needs to make a sound board for this.
Light up her attributes. Love it.
My preorder won't ship till Q1😢
Preorder for?
@@pinballdoctor Godzilla Premium. I put in for a preorder months ago but then they announced that black and white version and my order got pushed back to Q1 2025. Will by my first machine.
@@ellbeeyt Cue Tom Petty "The waiting is the hardest part". =) It is the best title Stern has put out in recent years. The production numbers are easily over 10,000 at this point. Are you planning on modding yours out? If so, which mods and are you going to do it yourself?
@@pinballdoctor Myself. I still need to order and see what I can actually get, but I wanted to do -neon scoop sign, the fancy atomic breath Godzilla model, Raiden UFO, maybe one of the oxygen destroyers, stadium lights probably as the game seems pretty dark at my location, speakers and maybe sub -shaker motor, art blades, maybe the mothra egg shooter knob, maybe the stern speaker lighting kit Actually I don't know if you've seen anything like this; the Atomic Breath Godzilla mod uses some sort of shitty clip-on vampire taps to wire in, would you just chuck that and solder and heat shrink it or do some connectors instead? Damaging the original wiring seems silly and I don't trust pierced thin copper to hold up at all.
Nice upgrades 👌👏
Ein toller Flipper aus einer tollen Zeit 😊
Ein toller Flipper aus einer tollen Zeit 😊
Sehr schöner Flipper.
Sir, I have seen your UA-cam on your pinball machine. I have one exactly like that. A 1979 Superman. I purchased it about a year ago for my grandson. He's 10 years old. Everything's been working fine, but I just noticed tonight. Most of lights is not working when I turn it on. I can play It, it registers the Lights registers on the score, and so forth. Put Superman, the background backboard lights isn't working, and most of the base lights aren't working. I noticed when I opened the door there's 4 or 5 fuses at the right top of the inside of it. Can you kind of help me? Tell me where I could replace these fuses. 'cause it's gotta be a fuse blonde, please. Help me, God bless you.
Yes. You commented on my video 4 months ago looking for bulbs. Did you find them? Look at all the fuses. You should be able to see if any are blown. Best to consult a pinball repair tech in your area as he could come out and fix the issues with your game.
@@pinballdoctor yes I need fine them I will check the fuses. How many are there
@2:22 - Solid state doesn't have anything to do with it, it's just a dumb idea that was put in place. You could easily defeat this switch by putting the magnet in place and plunge short. Score one time, then it would essentially become an orbit scoring spinner shots on both sides. The only thing it prevents is hitting the left spinner off the plunge. Not much thought went into it.
Flqsh actually produced more machines than both 8 ball and addams family due to the fact that williams did not keep mumbers sold that went overseas and bally did during 8 ball and bally williams did during addams family.
